TMJ Symptoms and Treatments

What is TMJ?

Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, or TMDs, are a group of conditions that cause pain and discomfort in and around the jaw joint. If normal daily activities such as chewing and talking are becoming increasingly difficult or painful, you may have issues with your TMJ. Pain in this area can be severe, causing you stress and discomfort that can worsen over time if left untreated.

The experienced team at Toowoomba Specialist Dental are committed to assisting with diagnosis, treatment and pain relief for our patients suffering from TMJ issues.

What Causes TMJ?

There are many reasons why people can develop TMJ disorders. While chronic TMJ pain may be caused by arthritis, damage to the joint or illness, sudden TMJ pain is more likely to be caused by trauma or damage to the jaw or neck. Grinding or clenching your teeth, muscle tension and poor oral health can also play a role in developing TMJ.

Symptoms of TMJ

If you suffer from a TMJ disorder, there are a number of symptoms that you may experience. Your symptoms may also affect other areas of the body, reaching far further afield than the jaw and may include:
  • Clicking, popping and grating sounds when opening your mouth
  • Pain moving your jaw
  • Soreness or stiffness around the neck jaw or teeth
  • Frequent migraines or headaches
  • Grinding or clenching teeth at night
  • Sensitive or painful teeth
  • Shooting pain in the back of the head
  • Persistent ear aches or tinnitus
  • Loss of hearing
  • Locking of your jaw joints

What Causes TMJ?

Whilst there is no quick fix, there are three key steps in the process to relieve TMD:
